pre-departure enthusiasm II
Finally got contacted by the program director wanting to just say hello, not that any pressing business would need to be attended to until August. I had been a little antsy since July started about not hearing anything, definately not helped by a dream of mine I had in mid-June wherein they basically...totally forgot about me and I had to arrange late transportation myself and was in a hurry and so on... Need to stop slacking off and order some clothes from JCP since they have apparantly free shipping on orders until the 18th. Additionally, for the first time, I'm starting to have second thoughts about changing my major. I haven't done so yet, just to be lazy I figured I would wait until I got back from Japan to do that. Really my problem is I have no fucking idea what I want to do with my life. Really this whole year has been a pretty big waste, which makes me feel somewhat guilty. About the only achievement I got in the 2004-5 school year was another year of Japanese. I think I'll do some analysis of how long it would take me to finish CS at this rate. If I do, I'm gonna need to stop dicking around for serious. | | Saturday, June 18th, 2005 | | 1:55 pm |
Pre-departure enthusiasm
What with all the people that come to visit Mom for whatever reasons, it seems everyone's pretty interested/excited/something about me doing study abroad. I've had to drag out my Japanese textbook for the map in the back and point out where I'll be numerous times already, and I won't be leaving for almost 3 more months. I guess I'm just used to the circle that is the Japanese program at OU, since maybe a quarter to a third do some kind of study abroad at some point. I may not show that I'm excited about it that much, but it's pretty hard to maintain excitement about something that won't be for a while yet. | | Wednesday, April 13th, 2005 | | 10:46 am |

Passport application sent in and crap. Of COURSE they didn't accept credit card, making me have to use this archaic "check" thinggy. Ninety fucking seven dollars. Also, I find it rather disturbing that the Athens County Courthouse basically shares a building with a CHURCH. Additionally, they have old school airport style security (metal detector and bag scanner) at the goddamn entrance. Ah, the good old days. What pisses me off is "public safety" never lapses. Someday it'll be mandated for total body cavity searches in airports, and you will have to have a helmet on to ride around in your car. Additionally some random terrorist(s) sabotaged my floor section's water foun-, er, supply... because I don't think it's normal for it to be basically laying down on the floor when it was attached to the wall and upright. It's generally a good idea to sit and think about something for awhile before putting something down. Anyway, I think I'm going to update about the LAN party that transpired the 7th-8th. It was a fairly normal LAN party, except with way more pop spills than normal (normal being somewhere around "none"). We didn't even accomplish that much, just about 12 rounds of Enemy Territory, a bit of BF:V, and a grand total of one round of Doom 3 multi. Doom 3 multi is terrible. If co-op was included it would have been passable, but the lack of a co-op mode and instead giving us solely the same old and tired deathmatch experience... Spawning, going through a door to go hunt down a weapon, and getting shot point blank with a shotgun and dying instantly is really really fun, you know. So much fun you'll forget all about playing CTF, oh wait they don't have it. But back to the mess... Somehow almost an entire can of MD managed to be overturned on a table, creating a mess. I figured that the can was not mostly full as judging by the relatively small puddle on the center of the table. What I didn't find out until I was doing the clean-up (by myself, of course. Everybody just pisses off when the party's died down to nothing.) of the cans, and I stepped in a very very wet spot perfectly lined with where the puddle I had wiped up sometime after it had been brought to my attention, despite the person who reported it merely wiped off his stuff that was involved. Naturally, this makes an individual furious, because it means even more time has to be spent cleaning up. This was the eighth LAN at my house since winter vacation had started last year, and also the 8th in a row I did clean-up by myself. Furthermore, I did not even hear one word of thanks for hosting it. Everybody just pissed off leaving me with an annoying mess. Prior to this LAN I was considering trying to host one on the 1st of September as a back-to-school kind of thing, but there would be fewer people around for it because those still in high school would have school that day and the following, and those going to semester colleges would be in classes. I am no longer considering hosting it, because they are simply too much trouble for me, especially when I don't get any assistance in cleaning up the mess they made, or even gratitude for hosting. Plus I get treated like shit by half (or more...pretty much everybody except Logan guilty of it at one point or another, buffer overruns excepted) of them during it, way to secure the possibility of future events, guys. Their year, or maybe it's just this (that?, even though a year of difference) generation... they just can't seem to comprehend sacrifice or compromise, at least on their own. It's just fucking idiotic how they will abuse a good thing until it comes to the breaking point and they lose it. Since the LAN I have been bouncing around with extremely erratic sleep cycles... 10 am to 8 pm on Sunday, then not again until 1 pm to 5 pm on Monday, then somewhere around 5 am to 4 pm on Tuesday... I really shouldn't return to the 2-4 am to 12-2 pm sleep schedule, because school will be coming up sooner or later. I read a reading assignment worksheet from towards the end of spring quarter for Japanese today... I seem to be able to read fine, however when I was trying to come up with the answers to the questions (yeah, I was too lazy to do the worksheet the first time around) I was having trouble coming up with grammatically correct (in as far as I had been taught) answers. I should check how much I remember in the other recurring subjects (C++ and calculus) and maybe work on refining my skills back up to where they were towards the end of spring quarter. Got the anxiety of school starting up again, but a lot weaker than last year. It feels more like resuming business as usual, although I am concerned about how Paynter will behave as a roommate. ...yeah. I didn't get a job. Mostly because I'm lazy. Secondly because there's not many jobs around here I would want to work (i.e. not fast food). The July LAN party at my house is tomorrow, so that's going to be lots of fun. I need to go out and get pop (going to need two or three of those 24-packs) sometime today hopefully. I hope we play more Enemy Territory than we have recently, we used to play about 20 games a LAN. The past two LANs we've only put in maybe one campaign of six to eight maps. Other games are detracting from the time spent playing Enemy Territory. Some people are giving the hint that they consider the game dead, but I still find it a lot of fun. It is a game that requires a lot of teamwork unlike any other game I have played, since you simply CANNOT do everything yourself. I'm hoping to play Axis so I can spend some time as something not an engineer so I can get above Major ranking. On Allies, I'm the only engineer ever on my team and Allies are generally the objective team so they always need at least one engineer. And i've spent the past 29 rounds on Allies. I think I need a break from engineering so I can wander around with a panzerfaust and make people explode. But noo, we're probably going to play a lot of Battlefield: Vietnam first. Whatever. It might not be a bad idea since last time I charged all the time with M60 and LAW and I got accustomed to charging the enemy and it worked rather well when we started playing ET later. I had one more death than kills that LAN, which is extremely unusual for an engineer-only player. Engineers can take about three shots before they die, or one explosive so much as looking at them funny until they get flak jacket. Meh. Need to finish (late) Japanese composition and start on CS project that's due sunday... next week is finals week, though, so I will be happy to get this the hell over. Of course, then I have to find a job for the summer (not that there are jobs to have outside of fast-food likely still available) I'd rather be lazy and sit around all summer, but money is also good. Hmm. Current Mood: tired | | Sunday, April 11th, 2004 | | 8:25 pm |
One year later...
Presently I'm working on a 2Fort map for Enemy Territory (I am Captain Unoriginality) and trying to not go insane from the sheer workload this quarter. I notice I've had this LJ marginally over a year now, so I'mma go revisit and comment. April 8, 2003 21:41 >> Er, okay. This is a first entry. And not the last, surprisingly. I have a bad tendancy to start things and just stop doing them midway through. Somewhere I have a personal journal textfile covering parts of summer 2002. >> Up until about now, i've sort of despised this sort of thing, until I had the urge to just...well, talk. Even if nobody reads it, it's still nice. >> I'm the always-thinking, quiet, and simply introverted type of guy in class. Most people, except for my few friends, tend to just ignore me. Well, I just need an outlet. Pie. >> Well. Near-ish future plans. I intend on going off to Ohio University in Athens this fall. Of course, the first couple years will just be core classes, but my major will probably be Computer Science. Hahaha. Right. I've taken major courses with my core classes all along so far. >> I admit that i'm a nerd; I only see the sun through the window every once in a while. I enjoy videogames, RPGs in particular, and I watch a good bit of anime. Not much difference except I see a lot more sun since I have to get up at seven in the fucking morning and walk around from class to class. >> As you may notice, my writing style tends to have problems with overused commas and flow from one sentence to the next is just a step below free association. Another problem with me writing (well, actually, doing any project in general) is I tend to get apathetic and stop maintaining my work and it falls into oblivion, as I found something else to occupy my time with, only to stop working on that as well, and the cycle repeats. No comment. >> I like a lot of music, except for techno, rap, R&B, and country. The kind of music I prefer to listen to is classical, classic rock, folk (in particularly the intreguing Scottish folk/rock band Runrig, and the newfie group Great Big Sea) and anime music, J-pop, some eurodance, and game music. Again, i'm a nerd. >> But enough for now. I'm exhausted. Moo. Current Mood: busyCurrent Music: Styx - Renegade | | Sunday, March 28th, 2004 | | 5:37 pm |

I am often criticized for not being observant. A week ago (been lazy and haven't written this sooner) I decided to jot down what I did during the day one day. --- I awoke at 7:40, probably thanks to the earlier rising of the sun. Probably should pull those damn blinds all the way down before going to bed. Discovered my internet connection problem was because my roommate managed to pull the RJ45 out of the connection to the network, didn't hear a click and am afraid he might have broke the clip but unsure. Watched a couple El-Hazard eps after getting my ass out of bed at 8:08. After that, I watched a couple replays via extended replay with my improvised ETPro 2.1 beta I nabbed. Left at 9:40 for calc, quiz today. Weather is nice, looks like spring is coming. Came upon a nice breeze by Gordy Hall. When I was standing in the hall waiting for the previous class in the same room as my math class to leave, Josh stopped by (kind of early for once) with nice dark circles under his eyes. Hung over, of course. This is why I don't drink. Sitting around Morton lobby waiting on Josh to finish; I don't have anything to do until 11:00 when the dining hall opens. Had a cheeseburger w/tomato, french fries with cheese, nachoes (using same cheese), and some sort of peach cobbler (w/o ice cream) for lunch. Saw one of the guys who went to Chubu last quarter there, he's often hanging around Gordy at the same time as me since we apparantly both have noon Japanese classes. Met Josh again on the second floor of Gordy as I was going up to the 3rd. The Japanese class before mine is watching the final video of some (allegedly 10+ year old) BBC series on Japan to serve mostly as a culture primer I guess. I don't think I have any homework, since it is a quiz day. Ja matta ne. Back in my dorm killing time until 3 when I have my CS class. Have a quiz in there. The video in Japanese class was relatively interesting, considering how old it is, it makes me wonder how different Japan is now compared to 10+ years ago or whenever it was made, especially on "internationalization" issues. Caught the last 20 minutes or so of this ridiculously silly sci-fi (parody?) movie. A quick trip to the IMDB shows it to be "Mom and Dad Save the World", (1992). In the dorm again after CS. I actually used the bathroom in the EECS school at the Convo and it has shower stalls wtf. I imagine left over from when the area was a dormitory. Not like EE or CS students need to shower after class. Took the CS quiz, it wasn't that hard except for a couple of stupid questions I wasn't sure on, I'm getting around an 84% in there right now and not liking it. --- Interestingly, we've had a cold blast since last weekend. Stupid cold weather. | | Thursday, February 12th, 2004 | | 8:13 pm |

Dream
Another weird dream. It featured my extended family (some uncles, aunts) and some guy who was a "classmate"-type person although I had never met him before in my life. It was incoherently-flowing, involved being in Canada I guess (because I recall a scene where I wanted to exchange USD to CND). I remember having a mix of 20s, 5s, 10s, 1s, and four or five 100s in my wallet (USD) for some reason. The fun part was recurring. Inside some sort of mall, somewhere, with a fairly narrow space between the shops etc on either side, there's this little Chinese type restaurant wedged between two stores with an elaborate sign of the shop name (alas, I have been awake too long and have forgotten it) with the red cloth thinggies dangling from the top of the entry way you push out of your way to get in. It was a fairly narrow place, with just a short bar and some stools and the kitchen behind it. I can't remember why, but I thought they were the best at something. I say it's recurring because I've had the same place in a dream awhile back. I can't remember anything about that dream besides that. Uh, I should probably do laundry or something. Hmm. Missed a question on my Japanese midterm because I thought today was the 4th. It's odd when it's 40F outside and you think it's rather warm. Had the most bizarre dream, that Dad was trying to get me to pack my stuff so he could burn the house down with Mom in it and he was acting like a total ass (obviously) during it all. Uh. John's a fucking asshole. He wanders in my room drunk (roommate likes to leave door open and not take his keys) and starts fucking with shit. Oh, and I HATE SNOW. Got a shitload last Sunday and some more throughout the week. in Computer Science last quarter, we had a system where everyone made up a code-name and the teacher would post a print-out of everyone's grades with the codenames as the only indication of who was who. Well, people eventually figured out who I was given I got the highest on everything except on one quiz where I got a 26/25 instead of 27/25. Yes, I had over 100% average in that class. I used "Shas" as my codename (no prize if you can figure out where I came up with that one) and this one guy who didn't know my real name just started referring to me as Shas. Okay. But the thing is, it's catching on with other people in that class. Eeh. Hmm. I've spent around an average of $7.50 a week here so far this quarter, a lot more if you include my book expenses and the few meals I had before the dining halls opened (I arrived early). This is a lot better than last quarter, where I spent something like $17.15 a week PLUS occasionally eating out (about once every other week, but still). The only changes were I bought 2 12-packs of ramen (which I just finished one of the packs yesterday) before moving in and I shifted the majority of my co-op purchases to dry cereal instead of junk sweets. I find dry cereal lasts longer. And that knocks off TEN dollars a week? Current Mood: boredCurrent Music: Splashdown - So Ha | | Monday, January 12th, 2004 | | 6:53 pm |
Hmm. John's not so bad these days. By coincidence, me, him, and a couple other guys from my floor have lunch at Shively at the same time. Oh yeah, and I was busy playing Call of Duty and I completely forgot to look at the time and I missed my CS class. This is the first college class I missed. Basically, I noticed I would be 20 minutes late by the time I could get there and went "fuck". I decided to avoid getting bitched at about being so late. She's really mean on attendance, it seems, but no real big loss. Now if only Josh will reply to my e-mail asking what I missed before tomorrow... Hope I didn't miss a surprise quiz or something because we're about due for one. Back to repetitive Japanese homework. between classes
I think things are going okay so far this quarter. My calc teacher allows open book/notes for quizzes and the final exam, and doesn't collect/grade homework, so that's awesome. I have Deguchi-sensei for Japanese this quarter (he subbed for Thompson-sensei because Thompson-sensei is the coordinator for the study abroad, and went to Japan with the Fall Quarter group) and he's [Deguchi-sensei] a good teacher. A lot more informal, in a matter of sorts. And I have this Andrea DeMott for Computer Science. She kind of reminds me of Mrs. Mossbarger for some reason. Soft-spoken, kind of old, but you have a feeling she can really raise hell if needed. At any rate, my only complaints so far are about the kind of weather one expects in winter. So fucking cold, plus snow and ice...ugh Current Mood: boredCurrent Music: Flogging Molly - These Exiled Years | | Saturday, January 3rd, 2004 | | 1:50 pm |
